Student-Centered Approach in the Professional Training of Future Primary School Teachers

Abstract

The article concentrates on the theoretical and practical analysis of the student-centered approach. It describes the student-centered approach as a driver of integration of national professional education toward the global standards and as an important factor of mitigating the primary problem of professional training at higher education institutions, namely, overloading with theoretical knowledge and lack of practical skills to apply this knowledge in a professional career.

The author emphasizes that the student-centered approach is a methodological tool for the implementation of the Bologna Process objectives and is listed as one of the tasks in the Standards and guidelines for quality assurance in the European Higher Education Area, the Tuning Educational Structures in Europe project, and the Strategy for the Development of Higher Education in Ukraine for 2022-2032.

The article identifies the key elements of the concept of student-centeredness, drafts ways to implement a student-centered approach in training programs for future teachers through innovative technologies (personality-oriented teaching, critical thinking development technology, problem-based and differentiated learning technology, interactive learning technologies, developmental learning technologies, information and computer technologies, project-based learning technologies, creative personality formation technologies, learning through play technologies).

Special attention has been focused on methods of stimulating and increasing motivation to study (emotional, cognitive, volitional, and social), which may be employed during seminars and practical classes with future primary education specialists.

It has been demonstrated that the application of the student-centeredness principle in the process of professional training of future teachers contributes to the development and self-development of their personality, taking into account their individual traits as a subject of learning and practical activity in the process of applying pedagogical technologies.
